The Internal Revenue Service will begin sending qualifying taxpayers their rebate payments in early May. To receive the payment, eligible taxpayers must file a 2007 federal income tax return. Even taxpayers who are not otherwise required to file a federal return must file to get the rebate. Those taxpayers who file a federal income tax return solely to get the rebate do not need to file a 2007 North Carolina income tax return unless they otherwise meet North Carolina’s filing requirements. Also, the rebates are not subject to federal or North Carolina income tax.
