Missed The Filing Deadline?
File And Pay As Soon As You Can
Personal tax season is over for most people. However, if you haven’t filed or paid your state taxes, you should do so as soon as you can to minimize any penalties and/or interest you may owe:
- If you did not file your state income tax return or request an extension by the April 15 deadline, you will owe a 10 percent late payment penalty and interest on your unpaid taxes. If you did not file for an extension, you should file and pay your state taxes as soon as you can to reduce the additional late filing penalty and interest you may owe.
- If you filed an extension, you have until Oct. 15 to file your tax return. However, tax payments are due April 15, regardless of when you file. If you received a filing extension but have not paid your taxes, you should pay those taxes as soon as you can. Interest and penalties may add to the total amount you owe.
- If you filed your taxes by April 15 but could not pay at that time, you should pay all or part of what you owe as soon as you can to reduce the amount of interest you will pay. You may pay your taxes with a personal check, a money order, or you may visit a service center and pay your balance in cash. The department accepts only checks, money orders, or cashier’s checks drawn on U. S. (domestic) banks and the funds are payable in U.S. dollars. Make your check or money order payable to N.C. Department of Revenue. Include with the payment your name, social security number, the kind of tax, and the tax year the payment is for. Do not send a duplicate copy of your state tax return with your payment.
- Once you receive an assessment for the taxes you owe, you may be eligible for a payment plan. Taxpayers or practitioners who would like to discuss payment agreements or other payment options may contact the department at 1-877-252-3252 or their local Collection Division Office. Have a copy of your tax return and your assessment available for reference when you call.
If you have questions about your state income taxes, call us at 1-877-252-3052 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
